The Stand Is Coming to Mission Valley Mall
The Stand is bringing creative burgers, sandwiches, salads, protein bowls, handmade shakes, and a full bar to Mission Valley Mall.
I noticed the construction wall for The Stand while walking through the mall, and this is one of the upcoming restaurant openings that immediately caught my attention.
At first glance, it sounds like a straightforward burger spot. Once you look through the menu, though, there is quite a bit more to it.
Along with burgers, The Stand serves grilled sandwiches, salads, bowls, wraps, hot dogs, vegetable sides, shakes, beer, wine, and cocktails. That variety makes it feel like a good fit for Mission Valley, especially when everyone in a group wants something different.
Location: Mission Valley Mall, 1640 Camino Del Rio North, San Diego
Planned opening: Summer 2026
Menu: Burgers, sandwiches, salads, bowls, shakes, cocktails, beer, and wine
If you already find yourself at AMC, Target, Nordstrom Rack, or grabbing dinner in Mission Valley, The Stand feels like one of those places that could easily become part of the regular rotation.
Why The Stand Feels Like a Good Fit
Mission Valley already has plenty of quick places to eat, but The Stand appears to be aiming for something more complete.
The new location is expected to include indoor and outdoor dining along with a full bar. Its location near AMC Theatres should make it an easy option before a movie, after work, or for a casual dinner that does not require much planning.
I also like that it is not trying to be overly formal. Mission Valley needs good everyday restaurants just as much as it needs destination dining.
The best neighborhood restaurants are often the ones that make an ordinary lunch, casual dinner, or last-minute night out easier.
What I Would Order First
The Mission Valley location has not opened yet, so these are not firsthand reviews. After looking through the current menu, though, these are the dishes that stand out most to me.
The Stand Burger
The namesake burger comes with a beef patty, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and Stand burger sauce on a brioche bun. For a first visit, this feels like the right place to start.
The Onion Stack
This is the heavier choice, with cheddar, bacon, crispy onion strings, bacon tomato jam, and hickory sauce. It sounds smoky, salty, crispy, and slightly sweet.
Short Rib Grilled Cheese
This may be the item I am most curious about. It combines braised beef, triple cheddar, bacon tomato jam, crispy onions, and hickory sauce on parmesan-crusted sourdough.
Chimichurri Steak Salad
For something fresher, this includes grilled steak, greens, crispy quinoa, green apple, cucumber, corn salsa, tomatoes, and charred corn vinaigrette.
Miso Salmon Bowl
The bowl combines miso-glazed salmon with kale, broccolini, cucumber salad, crispy onions, rice, and jalapeño-scallion aioli.
Mint Chocolate Crunch Shake
Made with vanilla ice cream, mint milk, chocolate syrup, and crispy chocolate cereal pieces. This may technically be dessert, but that is not stopping me.
Do Not Skip the Sides
The sides are more interesting than the usual fries-or-onion-rings decision.
The Fire Fries are tossed in a spicy sauce and served well done, which sounds exactly right next to a burger. The Red Ginger Green Beans and Meyer Lemon Broccolini also make the menu feel more varied than a typical burger restaurant.
For the first visit, I would probably order Fire Fries and one vegetable side for the table.
The Full Bar Changes the Feel
The full indoor and outdoor bar should help separate this location from a traditional fast-casual restaurant.
That gives The Stand the flexibility to work as a quick lunch spot during the day and feel more social in the evening. It also makes it a natural option before or after a movie at AMC.
Part of Mission Valley Mall's Evolution
Mission Valley Mall continues to evolve into more than just a shopping destination.
Over the past few years, we have seen new entertainment, updated public spaces, and more restaurants begin to reshape the property. The Stand fits naturally into that direction.
For those of us who live nearby, another quality casual restaurant is always welcome. Not every new opening has to be a special-occasion destination. Sometimes you just want somewhere reliable for lunch, dinner, or a bite before catching a movie.
My Initial Take
I obviously cannot give a full review until the doors open, but this is one I am genuinely looking forward to.
I already know I am walking in and ordering either the Short Rib Grilled Cheese or the Stand Burger. The harder decision is whether I have enough self-control to skip the shake.
If the food lives up to the menu, I think The Stand has a good chance of becoming one of those dependable Mission Valley restaurants that people come back to again and again.
Once it officially opens, I will come back, try the food for myself, and update this article with my honest thoughts and favorite menu items.
